No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic is going for history

New York began to shift on Thursday when the draws were released, giving way to a potentially historic tournament where all eyes will be on No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic.

After winning the first three Grand Slam titles this year to tie Federer and Nadal with 20 in his career, Djokovic could in one fell swoop pass them both for the all-time record and match Rod Laver’s achievement of winning all four tournaments in 1969.

At the same time, next generation threats like Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have been surging this year. All three have come close to winning their maiden Grand Slam title and could finally break through in New York.

Meanwhile, after a difficult year off the court, Naomi Osaka will try to rebound at the tournament where she feels most comfortable and reassert herself as the world’s top player.

Here are the four key questions for the men’s field coming out of the draw:

With Djokovic skipping the entire North American hardcourt swing, it’s unclear what kind of form he’s in right now as he tries to complete the calendar year Grand Slam. Djokovic looked exhausted at the end of the Olympics, where he lost back-to-back matches to Zverev and Pablo Carreño Busta, and he clearly needed a break. Was a month off enough to get right physically? Was it too much?

Djokovic may need to play his way into form in the early rounds, and the good news is there shouldn’t be too much trouble for him the first week. Things could get more complicated starting in the fourth round, possibly against Aslan Karatsev, who beat Djokovic on clay earlier this year. He could also face a competitive quarterfinal against either Hubert Hurkacz or Matteo Berrettini, who played well against Djokovic in the Wimbledon final.

But the marquee match of the tournament for Djokovic would likely come in the semifinals against Zverev. Who rides into the U.S. Open on an 11-match winning streak including the Olympic gold medal and the title in Cincinnati.

Zverev, who lost last year’s final to Thiem in a fifth-set tiebreak, is playing the best tennis of his life at the moment. He has beaten Djokovic three times, including twice on hard courts. The next step for Zverev is doing it in a best-of-five set match.

Giannis Antetokounmpo Revealed Why He Bills Steph Curry, Not Himself As The…

Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo recently was ranked as the NBA’s top player entering the 2022-23 season in ESPN’s annual list of the top 100 players.

But in his mind, he’s not the league’s best player. That title belongs to the reigning NBA Finals MVP.

“I believe the best player in the world is Steph Curry,” Antetokounmpo said Sunday at Bucks Media Day.

It’s not that Antetokounmpo was rooting for Curry and the Warriors to defeat the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals — although he might have been considering the Bucks were sent home by Boston in the second round of the postseason.

Antetokounmpo, a two-time MVP and NBA champion himself, has a specific reason for why he tabs Curry as the world’s top baller.

“Do I believe I’m one of the best players in the league, and the way I help my team be great and win games, it’s efficient and effective? Yeah, I do believe that,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m mature enough, I’m old enough to understand that.

“Do I believe I’m the best player in the world? No. I think the best player in the world is the person that is the last one standing. The person that takes his team to the Finals, to the finish line, and helps them win games and become champion.”

At Warriors Media Day later on Sunday afternoon, Curry learned of Antetokounmpo’s high praise and agreed with his thought process in the best player debate.

“I was thinking the same thing about him last year coming off their [championship],” Curry said.

The Bucks won their second championship in franchise history in 2021. Antetokounmpo was named the 2021 NBA Finals MVP and closed out the series by dropping 50 points on the Phoenix Suns in Game 6.

“Two years when we did that, yeah,” Antetokounmpo said. “When I was sleeping in my bed, I was like, ‘Oh yeah, maybe I’m the best player in the world.’ But now, no.”

Antetokounmpo further explained his take with a classic analogy from the basement.

“The way I view it, the winner is the best,” Antetokounmpo said. “The guy that wins is the best. When I play a game of ping pong — when I go to my house and play against my brothers, when I win, and I play against Thanasis, Kostas and Alex and then my mom and [wife] Mariah and I win, I’m the best.

“If Kostas played really good, a great series but didn’t win, how can he be the best when I won?”

The Bucks and Warriors are two of the top favorites to come away with the title. Could the league be in store for a Giannis-Steph Finals next season?

That would crown a new champion and decide Antetokounmpo’s greatest player debate.

Here’s a new example of why Ja Morant is a pass-first player on and off the floor.

The fourth-year Memphis Grizzlies point guard signed a record breaking contract extension this off-season.

One of his goals with that newfound wealth is to buy his teammates Rolex watches.

Morant’s contract is a five-year deal worth $193 million. The deal could become worth $231 million if Morant makes an All-NBA team this season.

“It’s just a matter of time,” Morant said of getting his teammates Rolex watches. “My bread got to kick in first. I’m still broke. Next year, when I get my money.”

Morant’s selflessness transitions to the court, too. He couldn’t name a player that’s surprised him through two practices because of how much he’s studying the game. Coaches and teammates have often raved about Morant’s gym-rat mentality.

Morant will sometimes be watching Desmond Bane’s highlights and text him with a compliment. This was also showcased in Morant’s YouTube series when he was watching film while on the sidelines at a Nike AAU game.

“I watch these guys probably more than they watch themselves,” Morant said. “Just to learn my teammates.”

Yes, even the rookies that don’t have NBA film yet.

“I study they college film and seeing where their spots at on the floor,” Morant added. “Now I know when I’m running the offense, where to put them exact guys at.”
Unselfishness, high I.Q. and work ethic are all attributes of a superstar player, and each has been exemplified by Morant.

Now that he’s an All-Star, second-team All-NBA player and one of the league’s top point guards, the next goal is a championship, he said.

“That’s all I got left to prove,” Morant said.

Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins has the challenge of unlocking every inch of Morant’s potential. The two came in together when Jenkins was hired and Morant was drafted in 2019.
