Warriors Coach Steve Kerr family’s twisting journey has lands them in Bay Area
In May 2014, Steve called to tell Maddy that he was taking a job with Golden State minutes before she went into a final for a film class.
“I was so flustered, I was sure I’d failed it,” Maddy said.
Now, not only is Dad living nearby in the hills of Berkeley, her mom is up from their family home in Rancho Santa Fe (San Diego County) on a regular basis. And this week, her older brother Nick, who recently graduated from the University of San Diego, was accepted into the School of Public Health graduate program at Cal.
Only youngest brother Matthew, who just finished his junior year of high school, is resisting the lure of the Bay Area. He thinks he wants to go back east to college. He will miss the family trip to Cleveland, instead staying home with the family’s yellow lab, Oscar, and prepping for the ACT exam.
“We’re trying to talk him into Cal,” Maddy said. “We’re a super close family.”
Margot met Steve when both were sophomores at the University of Arizona. They were set up on a blind date by his teammate, Bruce Fraser, now Kerr’s assistant coach, who goes by the nickname Q.

“I think he thought, ‘These two are nerdy, they’ll get along,’” Margot said. Her mother, Karen Brennan, is a poet, author and professor. Kerr’s father, assassinated by Islamic terrorists at the American University in Beirut the year before they met, also was an academic.
Good instincts, Q. They got along. Margot graduated a year before Kerr, because of his basketball redshirt year before his senior season, and was working at an advertising agency in Los Angeles when Steve called one day.
“Hey, I got drafted today,” he said. “By the Phoenix Suns.”
They laughed. The final selection of the second round thought he at least would get a workout with the team. Maybe he’d play in Europe and then try coaching in college. But that moment on June 28, 1988, turned into a 15-year NBA career and a post-playing life filled with opportunity.
“We were shocked when he made the team,” Margot said.

After a year of long distance, she gave up her Los Angeles job and apartment and was set to move to Phoenix when Steve was traded to Cleveland.
“Wait, what?” Margot remembers thinking.
So they moved to Ohio, got married and had their son Nick (who is excited to be heading back to “his roots” this week). When Nick was 3 weeks old, Steve was traded to Orlando. After that season, Kerr was out of a job.
Maybe his real life was about to start. But the Bulls were looking for a shooter and Chicago became home for five fulfilling years. Maddy and Matthew were born, Steve was mentored by Phil Jackson and Tex Winter, played alongside Michael Jordan and won three championships. When that team broke up, the family moved to San Antonio, where two more rings would be added to the Kerr family jewels.

Margot suspected coaching was in the future, but not right away. After originally planning to settle in Steve’s hometown of Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles County), they decided on Rancho Santa Fe, which seemed less complicated than Los Angeles and had what they needed: an airport, good public schools for their children, golf and surfing for Steve.
“Coaching was on the back burner,” Margot said. “He knew what kind of commitment it was. He just wanted to be with the kids.”
When Steve was the general manager of the Phoenix Suns from 2007 to 2010, he commuted back and forth. But it wasn’t fulfilling.
“He likes the on-court stuff,” Margot said. “Basketball is so pure. He doesn’t like the bureaucracy, the politics, all the crap that goes along with being a GM.”
That describes Kerr’s personality in general. Margot calls him a minimalist.
“He doesn’t like stuff,” she said.
