Chase Elliott, a prominent figure in the NASCAR Cup Series, faced a challenging 2023 season marked by setbacks and unexpected turns. As the dust settles on the tumultuous year, Elliott and his team are gearing up for a triumphant return in 2024. In a surprising turn of events, a pivotal change has already taken place, setting the stage for what could be a transformative year for the No. 9 team.

The Departure of Eddie D’Hondt: End of an Era
Eddie D’Hondt, the seasoned spotter who had been an integral part of Elliott’s journey since his full-time Cup Series debut in 2016, bid farewell to the No. 9 team on December 2. D’Hondt’s departure follows a remarkable 12-year collaboration that witnessed 26 wins and the 2020 championship. The announcement, made via social media, resonated across the NASCAR community, marking the end of an era for the long-standing partnership.

A Look Back at Elliott and D’Hondt’s Journey
When Chase Elliott stepped into the No. 24 car in 2016, he inherited not only Jeff Gordon’s championship legacy but also a seasoned team, including crew chief Alan Gustafson and spotter Eddie D’Hondt. Over eight seasons with the No. 24 and later the No. 9 team, the crew accumulated an impressive record – 18 wins, 93 top-5 finishes, 152 top-10 finishes, and the coveted 2020 championship.

D’Hondt, a constant presence in Elliott’s ear during each lap, played a crucial role in guiding the driver through challenges, offering support during lows and providing a voice of reason in intense on-track moments.

Eddie D’Hondt’s Exit: What Lies Ahead?
What sets D’Hondt’s departure apart is his anticipation for the future. Unlike retirement, his farewell message expressed excitement for what comes next. This hints at a potential continuation of his career in NASCAR, albeit not with Hendrick Motorsports (HMS). While some fans see this as a positive move for the No. 9 team, others are vocal about an even more significant change – the replacement of crew chief Alan Gustafson.

Alan Gustafson’s Role in the 2023 Season
The 2023 season was undeniably challenging for Alan Gustafson, with Elliott missing multiple races due to a snowboarding injury and a suspension. Despite these hurdles, Gustafson faced criticism for strategic missteps, including a notable error at the Watkins Glen race, where Elliott ran out of fuel in the final stage due to a pit box miscalculation.

Throughout the season, instances arose where Elliott and Gustafson appeared to be out of sync. A notable incident at the New Hampshire race highlighted the driver’s frustration with the car’s performance, as captured in the Radioactive segment of NASCAR Race Hub.

Looking Ahead to 2024: Winds of Change?
As the awards season concludes, attention turns to the upcoming changes for the 2024 season. With one confirmed alteration in the No. 9 team, speculation arises about potential additional shifts. The departure of D’Hondt marks the beginning of a new chapter for Elliott and his team, raising questions about the team’s strategic direction for the upcoming season.

In conclusion, Chase Elliott’s journey through the 2023 season, marked by challenges and unexpected turns, sets the stage for a compelling narrative in 2024. The departure of longtime collaborator Eddie D’Hondt signals change, leaving fans eager to see the strategic decisions that will shape the team’s path to victory in the upcoming NASCAR season.

NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney were recently on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and talked about the Netflix special NASCAR: Full Speed among other things. He took a trip down memory lane to remember how he got his first speeding ticket and quipped that he had received not one, but four tickets between the ages of 16 and 18. He told Clarkson, “I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18. I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers who told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”

Dale Jr.’s father Dale Earnhardt was one of the biggest names in stock car racing since its advent in the 20th century. While it is natural for anyone to be known as having interacted with the legend, Dale Jr. can’t quite put a finger on how four different officers could have given him his first ticket. However, he did have a more important lesson to take away from the tickets he got

“I learned my lesson,” he affirmed. “I haven’t had any problems since then.” Dale Jr. is one of the executive producers of Full Speed. The docuseries has been very well received by drivers and fans since its premiere last month.

The instantaneous impact that Full Speed has been having on NASCAR
During the last race weekend, several drivers voiced their support for the Netflix docuseries and said that it was helping the sport generate new fans. One of the series main characters, Denny Hamlin said, “I thought it was a very good introduction for new fans. Because they also were kind of teaching you some 101 stuff, like, here’s how this works.”

Xfinity Series racer and Live Fast Motorsports co-owner B.J. McLeod compared it to the Hollywood hit Days of Thunder and mentioned that it had the best potential since the movie to attract new fans. He said, “It’s something that people should see, and I think that it was an unbelievable opportunity for NASCAR to have that on Netflix.”

The docuseries chronicled the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff run and featured others including Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Ross Chastain, and Dale Jr., himself.

Picture this: Daytona’s sunny day and the racing enthusiasm are palpable. Amid the COVID-tinged atmosphere, in the fateful year of 2020, Chase Elliott finds himself facing a curious predicament. The stakes are high as he and Alan Gustafson gear up for a race day challenge. The challenge seems simple: “What must Chase have on race day?”

During the HMS fun game, Driver and Crew Chief Challange between the Hendrick Motorsports crew chief and the NO. 9. Chevy, a question was raised: ‘What must Chase have on race day?’

To this, Alan throws the first stone with his answer: “His Helmet.” A confident yet spontaneous answer to the ambiguous question, given the no-brainer importance of a helmet for a high-speed sport like NASCAR.

The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion, chimes in with exasperation and amusement, and said: “HANS. Where was it? Was it HANS? Should we tell that story?”, added amusingly. HANS device undoubtedly is a crucial device that keeps a driver’s head stable in high-speed crashes.

Chase Elliott’s Crew Chief Publicly Exposes Golden Boy’s Fatal Error

The Duo gave a flashback to Daytona, where Chase Elliott stood on the grid, with the weight of the race day excitement hanging in the air. Alan chips in, a mischievous grin hinting at the punchline, and revealed: “You didn’t have your bus and he’s on the grid to start the race like Daytona. He went straight to the car and I was like, hey, you got your helmet?” And then, the punchline that cracks open the story: “He just turned white.”

In a sequence that could rival any comedy script, the #9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 driver’s race day hit him like a ton of bricks just as the national anthem wraps up. “I think the anthem was done,” Chase quips as the weight of the missing helmet sinks in. The ensuing exchange between Chase and Alan is priceless, as Alan further queries, “Where is that? Is it Ryan’s bus?” Well, I might have to ask Chase.

But this is not HMS’s No. 9’s first release of a fun trip down memory lane involving their drivers. There’s more.

In a lighthearted game with the Hendrick Motorsports team, NASCAR stars Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson joined forces to poke fun at their teammate William Byron for his notorious habit of forgetting where he parked his car.

The host initiated the game by asking, “[Who is] most likely to forget where they parked their car?” Elliott held up Byron’s name card, and the young driver admitted, “Probably me.” As the room erupted in laughter, Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson chimed in, further solidifying the playful accusation. Byron even recounted a past memory of receiving an award for getting lost in a parking lot in high school, garnering more chuckles from his teammates.

Building strong relationships within a team, as seen with the Hendrick Motorsports team, is vital for success and consistency. This extends to the Motorsports industry, where collaboration and effective communication are paramount. Just as the NASCAR-winningest team thrives on a blend of humor and teamwork, professionals in the industrial kitchen trade must foster a workplace culture that supports innovation, productivity, and collaboration.

Ahead of the 2024 NASCAR season, tragedy has struck the community. As it happens, former NASCAR crew chief Ryan Pemberton has passed away. He was 54 years old at the time of his passing and will be sorely missed. One of the worst-hit members of the community, will be Dale Earnhardt Jr. This is because Pemberton was the JR Motorsports competition director, thus a key member of the team.

Pemberton has a fair amount of experience in the NASCAR arena. Back in 1995, he worked as a crew chief for Larry Pearson, guiding him to two wins that year. This also includes Pearson’s last Busch Series win at Myrtle Beach, which took his tally to 15 career wins. More recently, he was Regan Smith’s crew chief in 2014 at JR Motorsports. As competition director, his primary role was to coordinate between all of the JR Motorsports crew chiefs. Additionally, he worked closely with key personnel in the shop.

Pemberton started his NASCAR career at Roush Fenway Racing in 1988. After gaining a fair amount of experience, he was part of Mark Martin’s first victory at Rockingham in 1989. Six years later, he became Pearson’s crew chief, and was the youngest crew chief at the age of 25. He soon moved to the Cup Series, and worked alongside the likes of Mark Martin, Jerry Nadeau, Joe Nemechek, David Reutimann and Brian Vickers.

Finally, JR Motorsport came along as a newly established team and recruited him. Pemberton took on the role of director of competition for JR Motorsports in 2012, and has worked diligently. Aside from working with the crew chiefs, he used to oversee car research and development. During his tenure, he was part of three NASCAR Xfinity Series championships and multiple race wins with the organization. Prior to his appointment, the team could only muster nine wins, so he injected some much-needed confidence. When he worked as Regan Smith’s crew chief, he guided the driver to his fourth career win. That win was at the season-opening Daytona International Speedway, and Smith went on to finish runner-up in the championship point standings.

The Earnhardt family was devastated by the loss

A statement from Kelley Earnhardt Miller read, “Ryan was instrumental to JR Motorsports’ success during the decade he spent with us. He had such a passion for competition and, as a leader, knew how to motivate everyone he worked with. He will always be part of the JRM family. Our hearts go out to his wife Andrea and daughters Payton and Britton during this tremendously difficult time.”

Many others also shared their condolences at Pemberton’s passing. Admittedly, the cause of death is still unclear, but it is still a devastating loss nonetheless. Another fan wrote, “Hate hearing this. Ryan was always fun to talk to and be around . Thoughts and prayers to the whole Pemberton family”.
