“Monza’s Red Mist Revival: Räikkönen and Vettel Return to Conquer the Ferrari Legacy”
“Monza’s Red Mist Revival: Räikkönen and Vettel Return to Conquer the Ferrari Legacy”. The 2023 Italian Grand Prix: Ferrari’s Fierce Battle Without Team Orders
The 2023 Italian Grand Prix witnessed a thrilling battle between the two Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, all while operating without team orders. This intense rivalry harkened back to a race five years prior when Ferrari allowed Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen to race freely, a decision that had destructive consequences.
Sainz’s High Expectations:
The Italian Grand Prix at Monza has always posed unique challenges for Ferrari, especially when the team is competitive. This year, Carlos Sainz added to the anticipation by securing pole position, igniting the hopes of passionate Ferrari fans. Sainz led the race for the initial 14 laps, marking a historic moment for him as a Ferrari driver leading from pole at Monza.
Sainz’s Valiant Fight:
After Max Verstappen overtook Sainz, the Spaniard engaged in a fierce and passionate battle with Sergio Perez of Red Bull. Sainz’s determination was visible as he fought hard to maintain his position. However, the combination of Red Bull’s superior downforce, tire management, and DRS advantage eventually allowed Perez to secure second place.

Leclerc’s Challenge:
As Perez moved ahead, Carlos Sainz found himself vulnerable to his teammate, Charles Leclerc. Leclerc, who had chosen not to fiercely contest Perez, was now in a position to challenge Sainz. What followed was an electrifying battle between Ferrari teammates, a situation fraught with peril from the team’s perspective.
Team Dilemmas at Monza:
Ferrari had previously found itself in similar situations at Monza, seemingly paralyzed by the emotional weight of allowing their drivers to race freely. This dilemma mirrored past occurrences when team principal Mattia Binotto managed Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel in 2019, and earlier when Maurizio Arrivabene oversaw Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen in 2018.
A Delicate Situation in 2018:
The 2018 Monza Grand Prix presented one of the most intricate and delicate situations in Ferrari’s recent history. The team was fighting to maintain its title hopes with Sebastian Vettel, who was not in good terms with his teammate, Kimi Räikkönen. Meanwhile, Charles Leclerc, a rising star managed by Ferrari, was earmarked as the team’s future driver, creating internal tensions.
Adding to the complexity, Räikkönen, who was still unaware of his impending release from Ferrari, was due to receive a towing advantage from Vettel in qualifying, despite Vettel’s championship aspirations. This led to a convoluted situation where Vettel had to find an alternative tow, highlighting the team’s internal turmoil.

Räikkönen’s Pole at Monza:
Despite the team’s challenges, Kimi Räikkönen secured pole position with the help of Vettel’s tow, setting the fastest lap in F1 history at the time. However, the situation was further complicated as Räikkönen’s contract stipulated that he could fight for the win, creating an awkward dynamic within the team.
The Dramatic Start:
The race’s opening lap saw Räikkönen and Vettel leading Lewis Hamilton through the first chicane. Räikkönen, using his experience, cleverly backed off early for the Roggia chicane, forcing Vettel to do the same. This allowed Hamilton to pass Vettel and set the stage for a dramatic race.
Ferrari’s Strategic Errors:
As the race unfolded, Ferrari made strategic errors that cost them victory. During the pitstop phase, they brought Räikkönen in, anticipating a move by Mercedes to undercut him. However, Räikkönen’s blistering pace on fresh tires was unnecessary, and the team failed to guide him effectively. This led to tire blistering and allowed Hamilton to ultimately overtake him.
The 2023 Italian Grand Prix showcased the intense competition within Ferrari, with Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc battling fiercely. This memorable race revived memories of past dilemmas at Monza, where team orders and internal dynamics created complex situations for the Scuderia. Ferrari’s pursuit of victory at Monza has often been marred by emotional and strategic challenges, making this race a testament to the complexities of Formula 1.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Ended Up on the Wrong Side of the Law, charged with making trouble with two policemen
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Ended Up on the Wrong Side of the Law, charged with making trouble with two policemen
NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney were recently on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and talked about the Netflix special NASCAR: Full Speed among other things. During their conversation, Dale Jr. opened up about his traffic violations and revealed the interesting encounters that he had with 4 different police officers.
He took a trip down memory lane to remember how he got his first speeding ticket and quipped that he had received not one, but four tickets between the ages of 16 and 18. He told Clarkson, “I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18. I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers who told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”
Dale Jr.’s father Dale Earnhardt was one of the biggest names in stock car racing since its advent in the 20th century. While it is natural for anyone to be known as having interacted with the legend, Dale Jr. can’t quite put a finger on how four different officers could have given him his first ticket. However, he did have a more important lesson to take away from the tickets he got
“I learned my lesson,” he affirmed. “I haven’t had any problems since then.” Dale Jr. is one of the executive producers of Full Speed. The docuseries has been very well received by drivers and fans since its premiere last month.

The instantaneous impact that Full Speed has been having on NASCAR
During the last race weekend, several drivers voiced their support for the Netflix docuseries and said that it was helping the sport generate new fans. One of the series main characters, Denny Hamlin said, “I thought it was a very good introduction for new fans. Because they also were kind of teaching you some 101 stuff, like, here’s how this works.”
Xfinity Series racer and Live Fast Motorsports co-owner B.J. McLeod compared it to the Hollywood hit Days of Thunder and mentioned that it had the best potential since the movie to attract new fans. He said, “It’s something that people should see, and I think that it was an unbelievable opportunity for NASCAR to have that on Netflix.”
The docuseries chronicled the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff run and featured others including Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Ross Chastain, and Dale Jr., himself.
