After Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Madrid Open title in impressive fashion, the tennis world appeared to be united behind one narrative – he is the outstanding favorite to win the French Open.

Yet that view ignores the reality that his two great rivals have yet to take him on in 2023.

Alcaraz’s rise to the top of the ATP rankings will be confirmed after next week’s Italian Open and while the Spaniard is undoubtedly the form player on the tour heading into the second major of the season, two big questions need to be answered.

The teenager has yet to beat Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic in a best-of-five-set Grand Slam match and until he does that, those eager to crown him as the new king of tennis need to be cautious.

It is disrespectful to Djokovic and Nadal to declare their eras of dominance are over before they have had a chance to take on the player who appears to be ready to take their place.

So while there may be huge doubts over the 22-time major champions who are facing a facing against time to get back to their best for the French Open, yet comments like these from 18-time Grand Slam legend Chris Evert suggest some in the game are writing off the living legends of the game a little too hastily.

“When I look at Novak and Rafa, there are question marks about their health,” said Evert at a Eurosport event.

“These two have been the greatest clay court players of the last few years, but as they get older they get a little bit injured and we don’t know what their status will be.

“So I think Alcaraz is primed for this title at the French Open.

“Like everyone else, I am jumping on the bandwagon with Carlos because we have never seen a player with so much passion and so much hunger in such a long time.

“The guy has it all; he’s got the athleticism, the skillset, he knows defense, he knows offence and he has no weaknesses.

“To me, if he keeps himself healthy and hungry, I think the title is his (in Paris).

“If Novak and Rafa were not injured, I would have a different view and when Rafa is 80 years old, I wouldn’t rule him out from winning the French Open!

“So I am not dismissing them, but I just feel their preparation isn’t great, but Novak and Rafa have superior experience.

“They know better than anyone how to navigate their careers and they know how to manage their emotions. They also favour the majors more than anyone.

“They could come out of the starting gate playing vintage tennis, but on current form, you would have to slightly favour Alcaraz.”

Like all of us who love the game, Evert has been blown away by the brilliance of US Open champion Alcaraz, but we are all waiting for the first showdown between outgoing world No 1 Djokovic and his possible successor before any defining comments on a changing of the guard can be delivered.

Novak is due to return to action at the Italian Open in the coming days and if his elbow problem has sufficiently healed, he will have all the motivation he needs to knock Alcaraz off his perch.

The great champions don’t know when they are beaten and Djokovic will be eager to confirm as much if he gets his chance to take on Alcaraz in Rome.

Then, if the French Open showdown everyone in tennis is hoping for becomes a reality, we will get the answers to the questions everyone in tennis is now asking.

Formula 1: Mercedes announces it!
With his spectacular move to Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton has caused the first sensation in the new Formula 1 season. The problem for Mercedes: a successor is needed. The media has named a number of drivers who could drive for the top team in 2025. These include Andre Kimi Antonelli and Mick Schumacher.

Mercedes is currently preparing Antonelli as well as possible for a possible debut in the premier class of motorsport. The Italian will therefore be doing some private tests with an older Mercedes F1 car in Barcelona next week. The same applies to Mick Schumacher, who is the Silver Arrows’ reserve and test driver.

“We confirm that we will be conducting another so-called TPC, or ‘Testing of Previous Car’, next week (starting on June 3). Mick Schumacher and Kimi Antonelli will be behind the wheel of the 2022 Mercedes W13 racing car,” the racing team said.

Who will succeed Hamilton?
Both Mick Schumacher and Kimi Antonelli, together with George Russell, completed some tests with a Formula 1 car on the Silverstone circuit in April. Some media outlets described the tests as “jumping off”. Mercedes said this was “partially and incorrectly” described.

“Each driver completed a very different program in England, on different days, in different track and weather conditions,” said Mercedes. It continued: “Unfortunately, conclusions from these tests have been published that do not accurately reflect what really happened in Silverstone.”

Afterwards, there was a lot of praise for the two youngsters: “All we can say is that Mick and Kimi have both done an excellent job with their respective programs, to the complete satisfaction of the team. We are looking forward to the next three busy days.” The question of which of them will succeed Hamilton remains unanswered, but could finally be clarified in the coming months.

Denny Hamlin Doubles Down on Kyle Busch’s Wife’s Allegations on Ross Chastain

Denny Hamlin Doubles Down on Kyle Busch’s Wife’s Allegations on Ross Chastain

What happens when two of the most polarizing drivers in NASCAR tango on a road course? It warrants a whole lot of eyes is what it does. And so happened, as Ross Chastain spun out Kyle Busch on the very last lap of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

Racing for a Top-5 after what seems like an eternity, Busch got Chastain’d out of Turn 4A, simultaneously extending his winless streak to the 37th week running. After the dust settled on a thrilling Wine Country wild ride, the Melon Man would grab that much-needed P5 spot, whereas Rowdy missed the top 10 by only two positions. Frustrated by another dismal outing for her husband, even Samantha Busch took to Twitter to chastise Chastain.

Surprisingly, faced with disappointments of his own at Sonoma, an unlikely Denny Hamlin added his voice to the chorus heard around the Busch family. And it seems like Denny’s siding with his former JGR teammate’s woes over Ross Chastain’s resurgence in this opportune instance.

Denny Hamlin weighs in on Ross Chastain’s bump-and-run on Kyle Busch
Most opine that the Melon Man dumped Kyle Busch out of the top 5 contention. Speaking to FOX post-race, the man himself, claimed total sincerity, as he said, “I’m not sure what happened with the 8, either…” The situation in itself is barely that simple. Trailing the #8 RCR Chevy, Chastain made a thunderous advance behind Busch’s car on Turn 4A of the repaved racetrack hoping to overtake on the corner. But as PRN later posted an update through social media, “Ross Chastain says he locked up the tires and hit Kyle Busch” on that same pass.

This irked Samantha Busch quite a bit. Owing to the recent dismal fortunes of her husband, and the constant scrutiny, Samantha came to Kyle’s defense with a condescending tweet targeted toward Chastin which read, “Locked up my tires” aka over drove the corner.” On the contrary, Rowdy was seen limping on fumes across the finish line.

This brought forth something else, Denny Hamlin questioned it best on the post-race release of his podcast as he told co-host Jared Allen, “I knew that a top five was on the line and honestly other than driver ego, and we definitely have that, like what’s the difference between fifth and sixth? It’s one point, but I just knew that the #1 was going to go for it. Now, I don’t know, what we don’t know, is that because he came from entirely too far back in turn four to run into Kyle. Was Kyle running out of gas?

After ending his day on Lap 3 due to a blown engine, it is safe to say, that the #11 driver had a much more stable perspective than those watching the action from their respective screens. Yet, he explained his thought process further giving Ross the benefit of the doubt, as he stated, Because he was two car lengths behind, entering turn four. There is no Rhyme or Reason you should even be close to being beside somebody in the middle of turn four. Just trust me on this. I drive, I race, I understand.”

Concluding his sentiments, Denny concurred with the first lady of the Busch household, albeit with some confusion on the follow-up: “You might close it to one car length if you really drive it in. There’s no Rhyme or Reason he (Chastain) should have been beside the eight unless he entirely missed the corner like by a mile, that is a possibility, or the #8 had stumbling issues…”

As a safety measure for his words often being taken out of context, Denny would reiterate himself one last time, clearly elaborating, “Listen the #1 blew the corner, no matter how you look at it. He wasn’t going to. I mean, he drove up way beyond the rumbles and there’s no disputing that. It’s just a matter of: did Kyle not help his own cause by running out in that spot.”

In the video: Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton punished team boss Toto Wolff

Despite the first podium finish of the season, things seem to be going badly for Mercedes in Formula 1. The Silver Arrows did find their old strength in Canada, as shown by George Russell’s pole position and third place, but no one was really happy after Sunday’s Grand Prix. The third-placed Briton was annoyed about his own mistakes and said that with an ideal outcome to the race, victory would have been possible.

His teammate must have been annoyed too. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in a thrilling race – a place that no driver from a top team in the premier class of motorsport would like to end up in. Immediately after the race, team boss Toto Wolff radioed encouraging words to the seven-time world champion. “Lewis, the positive thing is that our car has returned to its old strength and we will continue exactly where it was.” The 39-year-old’s answer: silence. Not a word from the Brit could be heard on the radio.

The reason could have something to do with Hamilton’s move to Ferrari next year. Many observers believe that Mercedes is only relying on Russell after the deal was announced and is often putting Hamilton at a disadvantage when it comes to strategy. It is unclear whether this was actually the reason for the silence on the pit radio. Perhaps the anger over missing out on a podium place was too great.
