Michael Schumacher’s brother makes FIA demands after Max Verstappen title win
Michael Schumacher’s brother Ralf has demanded the FIA investigate after Pierre Gasly came close to hitting a tractor as Max Verstappen secured the crown at the Japanese Grand Prix. The recovery vehicle was brought onto the track to pick up the stricken Ferrari of Carlos Sainz who crashed on lap one.
Meanwhile, Gasly was racing to reach the back of the safety car after pitting for a new nose cone and passed the tractor at almost full speed. The Frenchman hit back at the FIA over team radio, branding the decision to bring the tractor onto the track as “unacceptable”.
He continued to vent anger to his mechanics during the red phlegm, suggesting he could have been killed if he had made contact with the vehicle. However, Gasly was penalised after the incident after the FIA claimed he was travelling too fast.

The incident came eight years after Jules Bianchi lost his life in a similar incident with a tractor at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. Schumacher has demanded an urgent enquiry into why the vehicle was on the track.
Writing in his Sky Germany column, Schumacher said: “The topic surrounding Pierre Gasly was highly emotional. I can understand the drivers’ criticism. They have indicated that they don’t want to see any of these tractors while there are still cars on the route.
“Nevertheless, that doesn’t justify Gasly driving behind the field at 250km/h at this point. This is anything but clever. I think both sides need to question each other. Also, as long as there is no imminent danger, it shouldn’t be a problem to wait until the cars are all in the pits before sending out the tractor.
“It needs to be investigated why things ultimately went differently than what was discussed with the drivers.
“I think the penalty for Gasly is correct and understandable, because the interruption of the race was clearly recognisable. There is also the rule that you should drive at walking pace and be able to stop at any time – and for good reason, because there can be people on the track after all.”

Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA) director George Russell said the incident was “disappointing” after revealing the issue had been mentioned in the drivers’ briefing last week. Fernando Alonso also offered to help the FIA, stressing it needed to be the “last time” it happened during a Grand Prix.
The FIA has already promised to look into the circumstances around the recovery vehicle to ensure improvements are made.
An FIA statement read: “While it is normal practice to recover cars under safety car and red flag conditions, due to the particular circumstances and also taking into account feedback from of a number of drivers, the FIA has launched a thorough review of the events involving the deployment of recovery vehicles during the Japanese Grand Prix. This is part of the common practice of debrief and analysis of all race incidents to ensure continual improvements of processes and procedures.”

During their conversation, Dale Jr. opened up about his traffic violations and revealed the interesting encounters that he had with 4 different police officers.
He took a trip down memory lane to remember how he got his first speeding ticket and quipped that he had received not one, but four tickets between the ages of 16 and 18. He told Clarkson, “I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18. I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers who told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”

During the last race weekend, several drivers voiced their support for the Netflix docuseries and said that it was helping the sport generate new fans. One of the series main characters, Denny Hamlin said, “I thought it was a very good introduction for new fans. Xfinity Series racer and Live Fast Motorsports co-owner B.J. McLeod compared it to the Hollywood hit Days of Thunder and mentioned that it had the best potential since the movie to attract new fans.
