MAX VERSTAPPEN and Charles Leclerc want a solution to a key issue in Formula One following the…
Formula One world champion Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc have joined forces to urge Formula One authorities and tyre suppliers Pirelli to find solutions for hazardous wet races. Both the Japanese and Singapore Grand Prix were severely affected by the weather conditions as standing water and spray on the tracks caused havoc and delayed start times.
Teams continued to use intermediate tyres with the extreme tyres rendered futile despite the wet conditions due to their warm up issues and lack of efficiency. The blue extreme tyres were only used when required to do so by the FIA, but were quickly changed upon the race’s resumption. Verstappen believes Formula One needs to work with supplier Pirelli to produce higher quality wet tyres, causing less disruption to weather-affected race weekends.

“I don’t want to take a dig out of anyone, but I think we need better rain tyres,” Verstappen said. “I’m very happy to have a few test days, and try all different kinds of tyres, but we need better rain tyres.
“The extremes are just slow, and they can’t really carry a lot of water away. That’s why everyone always tries to switch very quickly to the Intermediate because it’s just so much faster over a lap. You could see from one lap to the next, we went from the extreme to the Inter today, and we went nearly five seconds faster and that is just too big.
“Maybe we can just organise more tests in the wet and work together to try and find better tyres to at least have an opportunity to really drive in the wet and not always only drive like two laps on an extreme, switch to intermediate and call it a wet race because a wet race is also normally driven with heavy rain.”

Verstappen’s rival Leclerc also insists that Formula One must find a solution to the ‘dangerous lack of visibilty caused by spray on wet tracks.
“I think a big problem of these of these cars is just the visibility,” Leclerc said. “So whatever we can do to try and improve the visibility, and minimize the spray, especially behind the cars, this will be hugely beneficial because I believe that sometimes we can actually run for the conditions of the track.
“But just because of the visibility, because it’s so dangerous being behind and you don’t see anything that we don’t we end up running at all. We should try and find a solution to try and minimise the spray.”

NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 2023 Cup Series champion Ryan Blaney were recently on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and talked about the Netflix special NASCAR: Full Speed among other things. During their conversation, Dale Jr. opened up about his traffic violations and revealed the interesting encounters that he had with 4 different police officers.
He took a trip down memory lane to remember how he got his first speeding ticket and quipped that he had received not one, but four tickets between the ages of 16 and 18. He told Clarkson, “I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18. I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers who told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”
Dale Jr.’s father Dale Earnhardt was one of the biggest names in stock car racing since its advent in the 20th century. While it is natural for anyone to be known as having interacted with the legend, Dale Jr. can’t quite put a finger on how four different officers could have given him his first ticket. However, he did have a more important lesson to take away from the tickets he got
“I learned my lesson,” he affirmed. “I haven’t had any problems since then.” Dale Jr. is one of the executive producers of Full Speed. The docuseries has been very well received by drivers and fans since its premiere last month.

During the last race weekend, several drivers voiced their support for the Netflix docuseries and said that it was helping the sport generate new fans. One of the series main characters, Denny Hamlin said, “I thought it was a very good introduction for new fans. Because they also were kind of teaching you some 101 stuff, like, here’s how this works.”
Xfinity Series racer and Live Fast Motorsports co-owner B.J. McLeod compared it to the Hollywood hit Days of Thunder and mentioned that it had the best potential since the movie to attract new fans. He said, “It’s something that people should see, and I think that it was an unbelievable opportunity for NASCAR to have that on Netflix.”
The docuseries chronicled the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff run and featured others including Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Ross Chastain, and Dale Jr., himself.
