In a surprising twist to his NASCAR Cup career, Georgia native Chase Elliott finds himself in an unfamiliar position. Instead of chasing a driver’s title, he’s now a contender for the owner’s championship, presenting the 27-year-old with a unique dilemma.
Elliott’s No. 9 Chevrolet, part of Hendrick Motorsports, has advanced into the Round of 12 in the owner’s championship. This shift in focus has prompted Elliott to contemplate a reset in his approach to racing. He explains, “I would love to completely take a reset and try really hard to do things way different. I am still going to try and do some of that, but it is a fine line. It’s a tough balance.”

As Elliott heads into the first race of the second playoff round, he finds himself ranked 12th in the owner standings. His standing in this championship is primarily due to the exceptional performance of the three substitute drivers who stepped in for him during his absence. Notably, Elliott missed six races due to a broken leg and served a one-race suspension for an incident involving Denny Hamlin during the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend. While the driver’s championship often grabs the headlines, it’s the owner’s championship that significantly impacts the financial rewards received by each racing organization at the season’s conclusion.
With his team in contention for the owner’s championship, Elliott acknowledges the importance of consistent high-performance from his team. However, he also recognizes that there are habits he’d like to break and areas in which he wishes to improve personally.
Elliott remarks, “You miss the driver’s side, and I think a lot of people just think that you can throw it all in the trash and go and hit a really big reset button. To a degree, I want to do that. I want to potentially push myself in areas that I probably wouldn’t just for the sake of trying to make the most of the weekend. But there’s a really fine line because getting the car through these rounds is a big deal.”

While competing in the playoffs, Elliott is approaching each race as if he were in contention for the driver’s championship while simultaneously working on self-improvement.
“There are just areas that I don’t feel like I’m doing a great job in, and I just want to make that better,” says Elliott. “That’s all I care about, just improving.”
He adds, “I really don’t think the cars are the problem. I think I need to be better. You look at how William (Byron) and Kyle (Larson) and Alex (Bowman) have run throughout different points of the season, I just don’t think that’s (the car) an excuse. I think I can be better. I think I can do more to extract pace out of our car, and that’s what I’m gonna work on.”
Elliott is acutely aware that each race holds significance as long as he remains a contender for the owner’s championship. He emphasizes, “We’re still racing for something. So, you got to do that stuff in moderation and still try to perform well.”
Through this unique journey, Chase Elliott has learned that life extends beyond the racetrack, and there are bigger things to consider than cars going around in circles every weekend.

Secret Service agents fatally shot Crooks, One attendee was killed and two spectators were critically injured. All were identified as men. The attack was the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981
The attack drew new attention to concerns about political violence in a deeply polarized U.S. less than four months before the presidential election
President Joe Biden, who is running against Trump, was briefed on the incident and spoke to Trump several hours after the shooting. Many Republicans quickly blamed the violence on Biden and his allies, arguing that sustained attacks on Trump as a threat to democracy have created a toxic environment.

During their conversation, Dale Jr. opened up about his traffic violations and revealed the interesting encounters that he had with 4 different police officers.
He took a trip down memory lane to remember how he got his first speeding ticket and quipped that he had received not one, but four tickets between the ages of 16 and 18. He told Clarkson, “I had a few issues in the first two years of having my license, from 16 to 18. I got four tickets, and the funny thing about it is, is that it was four different officers who told me they all gave my dad his first ticket, so I don’t know how that is possible.”
Dale Jr.’s father Dale Earnhardt was one of the biggest names in stock car racing since its advent in the 20th century. While it is natural for anyone to be known as having interacted with the legend, Dale Jr. can’t quite put a finger on how four different officers could have given him his first ticket. However, he did have a more important lesson to take away from the tickets he got
“I learned my lesson,” he affirmed. “I haven’t had any problems since then.” Dale Jr. is one of the executive producers of Full Speed. The docuseries has been very well received by drivers and fans since its premiere last month.

During the last race weekend, several drivers voiced their support for the Netflix docuseries and said that it was helping the sport generate new fans. One of the series main characters, Denny Hamlin said, “I thought it was a very good introduction for new fans. Because they also were kind of teaching you some 101 stuff, like, here’s how this works.”
Xfinity Series racer and Live Fast Motorsports co-owner B.J. McLeod compared it to the Hollywood hit Days of Thunder and mentioned that it had the best potential since the movie to attract new fans. He said, “It’s something that people should see, and I think that it was an unbelievable opportunity for NASCAR to have that on Netflix.”
The docuseries chronicled the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series playoff run and featured others including Ryan Blaney, Denny Hamlin, William Byron, Ross Chastain, and Dale Jr., himself.
